Ancell Trust - Sporting
Charity
Frederick
Ancell, a benign, snuff-taking Stony Stratford
shopkeeper who died in 1919, left the greater
part of his estate to charities for the good of
the town.
The
Ancell Trust came into being, and in 1923 it
bought the Mabbuts Close land which is now
Stony's sports ground with its beautifully level
cricket table and trees' shade.
With
the Ancell trust still the landlord, the various
sections of the Stony Stratford Sports club - the
ambitious football, cricket, tennis, bowls and croquet
clubs - lease their own parts of the ground, and
are involved with matters like public liability
insurance.
The
Trust continues with contemporary aspects of its
early charity work - like helping young people
attending arts college with the cost of necessary
materials, and assisting a single mother who
wanted to return to nursing work.
