The Church of St Mary and St Giles
Either
side of Stony Stratford, to the east and to the
west are two small places, both medieval shrunken
settlements, which are older than the town
itself.
Passenham,
on the east side and (Old) Wolverton on the west
side have Saxon origins and names. They are each
in their way outstanding buildings, of national
importance.
Part
of their appeal lies in their setting close to
the River Ouse which flows past through both
parishes, amid tranquil fields and church yards
full of old memorials and planted with fine
trees. Passenham is (just) in Northamptonshire on
the north bank of the Ouse, Wolverton stands on
higher ground to the east. The churches have to
be kept locked, but may be seen at service times
or by arrangement with a key holder.
Details
of other local churches can be found in the box
on the right.
